Sanctuary

To be a fairy perched on a blossoming tree
is to daydream, play, and live carefree.

_____________________________________________________________________
To be a mermaid trapped beneath a rippling pond
is to be lonely and fear what’s beyond.

To be a phoenix emerging from ash and flame
is to begin again, though not the same.

Sanctuary
It is easy to feel both lost and trapped at the same time, especially now. While it is increasingly important that we all do our part and stay home for the good of the entire global population, there are many that are struggling to do so. My home has always been a place of sanctuary for me where I could escape from the rest of the world and be rejuvenated. My 180 year-old farm house, isolated on top of a hill with what feels like its own private park surrounding it, has always felt like it was straight out of a storybook.
Each of these short video clips, filmed on my family’s property, showcases a piece of the magnificent world I grew up in.  The footage is captured while on walks with my dog, Sammy, who accompanies me on our miniature adventures and together we discover the beautiful things that even just this small piece of our world can offer. Overlaid on the videos are animations depicting various magical creatures—a very clear visual representation of the way in which I see the land around my home. Each blossom on a tree, ripple on the water, or pile of ash has beauty. Unnoticed moments hold everyday magic within them. Each unit of the triptych represents a different stage of my life and my process in coping with the current state of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. First is the preamble to the chaos. Blissfully unaware of what is to come, the pixie among the blossoms represents innocence from a time before COVID and a time before adulthood. Next is the mermaid in a pond. She is where I, and much of the world, currently am: trapped and a bit frightened but finding a way to survive as she waits. Finally, it ends with the phoenix, a widely accepted symbol of hope and change, rising from the ashes to start fresh and begin again. It is this promise of the future that should carry us forward.
